Abstract

I think that a language is not just a communication tool. We can get more things froma language. My focus is on “metaphors”.
A metaphor is often regarded as a poetic device to illustrate a sentence or a conversation. But a metaphor also has an unique function. A metaphor originates from previous generations and contains their sensitivity. In the sensitivity of metaphors, possibilities exist to change our minds and to enhance the quality of life where we live today.
This project is to search for the functions and origins of metaphors and to materialize the metaphors through design in order to take the sensitivity of previous generations.
The process of materializing metaphors into objects will be explored, and the findings from this research will be a catalysis for a new design.
Here I have chosen three Japanese metaphors and have designed a clock, a lamp and a light.

Musical Dining (2006)

There are a lot of sounds and noises around us.
This table has a mechanism like a marimba. When you put objects on various points of it, you hear various sounds. For example, you hear a high tone when you knock a short wooden bar and you hear a low tone when you knock a long wooden bar.
Having dinner on this table will be transformed into a marimba playing experience.

Rotating Tea Set (2008)

It is thought that pottery was generated in order to carry foods or water.
These are a tea pot, a cream jug and sugar bowl whose shapes look like a tire. It can rotate on a table because it leans slightly. Tea is carried from a person to a person while the container is rotating.
If there is tea inside, the tea takes a role of a weight and makes the tea pot more stable.
There is also a circle ditch on the surface because you grab the tea pot and pour tea with one hand.
